The question, in short

A cuboid of iron measures w cm by 5 cm by 4 cm, with density 7.8 g/cm³ and mass 1950 g. Work out the value of w.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Volume = mass ÷ density
  2. 2Volume = 1950 ÷ 7.8 = 250 cm³
  3. 3Volume of the cuboid = w × 5 × 4 = 20w
  4. 420w = 250
  5. 5w = 250 ÷ 20
  6. 6w = 12.5
