The question, in short

On a grid, enlarge the shaded triangle with scale factor 1/3 about centre (1, 7), giving the new vertices.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 2 marks

  1. 1The shaded triangle has vertices (7, 13), (7, 4) and (13, 4)
  2. 2The centre of enlargement is (1, 7) and the scale factor is 1/3, so each vertex moves to one third of its distance from (1, 7)
  3. 3(7, 13): from the centre the vector is (6, 6); one third of this is (2, 2), giving (1 + 2, 7 + 2) = (3, 9)
  4. 4(7, 4): from the centre the vector is (6, −3); one third of this is (2, −1), giving (1 + 2, 7 − 1) = (3, 6)
  5. 5(13, 4): from the centre the vector is (12, −3); one third of this is (4, −1), giving (1 + 4, 7 − 1) = (5, 6)
  6. 6Join the points: the image is a triangle with vertices (3, 9), (3, 6) and (5, 6), with a vertical side of 3 units and a horizontal side of 2 units

AnswerA triangle with vertices (3, 9), (3, 6) and (5, 6)
