The question, in short
Solve the pair of simultaneous equations 6x + 4y = 1 and 3x + 5y = 8, showing clear algebraic working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 3 marks
- 1Multiply the second equation by 2: 6x + 10y = 16.
- 2Subtract the first equation: 6y = 15, so y = 2.5.
- 3Substitute into 3x + 5y = 8: 3x + 12.5 = 8, so 3x = −4.5.
- 4x = −1.5, y = 2.5
Answerx = −1.5, y = 2.5
