The question, in short

Answer four short arithmetic questions: square a decimal, find a cube root, express a repeated multiplication and division as one power of 7, and insert brackets to make two calculations true.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Calculate the value of 3.4 squared.

  1. 13.4 × 3.4 = 11.56

Answer11.56

Part (b) · 1 mark

Find the cube root of 373 248.

  1. 170³ = 70 × 70 × 70 = 343000, which is a little too small
  2. 2Try 72: 72 × 72 = 5184
  3. 35184 × 72 = 373248
  4. 4So 72³ = 373248
  5. 5The cube root of 373248 is 72

Answer72

Part (di) · 1 mark

Place one pair of brackets in 5 + 3 × 2 so the result equals 16.

  1. 1Without brackets, 3 × 2 = 6, then 5 + 6 = 11
  2. 2To get 16, need 5 + 3 = 8, then 8 × 2 = 16
  3. 3So brackets around 5 + 3

Answer(5 + 3) × 2 = 16

Part (dii) · 1 mark

Insert one set of brackets in 10 − 8 − 10 − 6 ÷ 2 to make it equal 0.

  1. 1Without brackets: 10 − 8 − 10 − 3 = −11, which is wrong
  2. 2Put brackets round 10 − 6: (10 − 6) ÷ 2 = 4 ÷ 2 = 2
  3. 3Then 10 − 8 − 2 = 0, so 10 − 8 − (10 − 6) ÷ 2 = 0

Answer10 − 8 − (10 − 6) ÷ 2 = 0
