The question, in short
ABCD is a square with A(−5, 2) and B(3, 5). Find the equation of the line through B and C, giving it as ax + by + c = 0 with integer coefficients.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 4 marks
- 1Gradient of AB = (5 − 2) ÷ (3 − (−5)) = 3/8
- 2BC is perpendicular to AB, so its gradient is −8/3
- 3Through B(3, 5): y − 5 = −8/3 (x − 3), so 3y − 15 = −8x + 24
- 4Rearrange: 8x + 3y − 39 = 0
Answer8x + 3y − 39 = 0
