The question, in short

Solve x² + y² = 41 and 2x + y = 3 simultaneously.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 1x² + 3(x + 2) + (x + 2)² = 7
  2. 2x² + 3x + 6 + x² + 4x + 4 = 7
  3. 32x² + 7x + 3 = 0
  4. 4(2x + 1)(x + 3) = 0, so x = −1/2 or x = −3
  5. 5y = −1/2 + 2 = 3/2 and y = −3 + 2 = −1

Answerx = −1/2, y = 3/2 and x = −3, y = −1
