The question, in short
Lui evaluates 30 − 4x at x = −5 and gets 10, which is wrong. Explain his error, then list all possible values of a positive odd number Y with Y ≤ 9.

Part (a) · 1 mark
Identify the mistake in Lui's substitution and calculation of 30 − 4 × −5.
- 1Substitute x = −5: 30 − 4 × −5
- 2−4 × −5 = +20 (negative × negative is positive)
- 330 + 20 = 50
- 4Lui wrote 30 − 20, treating −4 × −5 as −20
Answer−4 × −5 = +20, so it should be 30 + 20 = 50, not 30 − 20
Part (b) · 2 marks
List every positive odd number Y satisfying Y ≤ 9.
- 1Positive means greater than 0
- 2Odd numbers up to and including 9
- 31, 3, 5, 7, 9
Answer1, 3, 5, 7, 9
