The question, in short
Using a histogram of book weights in grams, where 75 books weigh under 100 grams, estimate the probability that a randomly chosen book weighs between 400 and 600 grams.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Solution · 4 marks
- 1First bar: 75 books over 100 g, density 0.75 = 3 squares, so 1 square = 0.25
- 2400 to 450: density 1, so 1 × 50 = 50 books
- 3450 to 500: 2.5 × 50 = 125; 500 to 600: 0.25 × 100 = 25
- 4All books: 75 + 225 + 250 + 125 + 50 = 725
- 5Probability = (50 + 125 + 25)/725 = 200/725 = 8/29
