The question, in short

Triangle XYZ has XZ = 16 cm, angle YXZ = 130°, angle XYZ = 25°, each given to 2 significant figures. Find the upper bound of YZ to one decimal place, showing working.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Bounds: XZ ≤ 16.5, angle YXZ from 125° to 135°, angle XYZ from 24.5° to 25.5°
  2. 2Sine rule: YZ = XZ × sin YXZ ÷ sin XYZ
  3. 3Largest YZ: XZ = 16.5, sin 125° (bigger than sin 135°), sin 24.5°
  4. 4YZ = 16.5 × sin 125° ÷ sin 24.5° = 32.59…
  5. 5Upper bound = 32.6 cm
