The question, in short
Sector OPQ has radius r cm, arc PQ = (21 − r) cm and angle θ radians. Show the sector area formula, then find ranges of r and θ given area at least 27 cm².
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 3 marks
Show that the sector area A equals (r/2)(21 − r), using the arc length and angle.
- 1Arc length: rθ = 21 − r, so θ = (21 − r)/r
- 2A = ½r²θ = (r²/2) × (21 − r)/r
- 3A = (r/2)(21 − r)
AnswerA = (r/2)(21 − r) shown
Part (b) · 4 marks
Find all values of r for which the sector area is greater than or equal to 27 cm².
- 1(r/2)(21 − r) ≥ 27
- 2r² − 21r + 54 ≤ 0
- 3(r − 18)(r − 3) = 0 gives r = 3, 18
- 43 ≤ r ≤ 18
Answer3 ≤ r ≤ 18
Part (c) · 2 marks
Using your values of r, write down the corresponding set of possible values of θ.
- 1θ = (21 − r)/r
- 2r = 18 gives θ = 1/6; r = 3 gives θ = 6
- 31/6 ≤ θ ≤ 6
Answer1/6 ≤ θ ≤ 6
