WMA11/01 Jan 2024, Question 6: Trig Graphs: Amplitude and Period
Pearson Edexcel International AS Level Mathematics · Pure Mathematics 1 (WMA11) · Calculator · 6 marks
The question, in short
Using the graph of y = 5 cos x in degrees, identify the coordinates of the marked minimum point P, then find the first maximum point Q with x > 0 for two other curves.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
State the coordinates of P, the second minimum point to the right of the y-axis on the graph of y = 5 cos x.
- 1Minima of 5 cos x are at 180°, 540°, … with y = −5
- 2P is the second minimum for x > 0: P(540°, −5)
Answer(540°, −5)
Part (bi) · 2 marks
For y = 5 cos x − 2, find the coordinates of Q, the maximum point with smallest positive x.
- 1y = 5 cos x − 2 is C₁ moved down 2; maxima at 0°, 360°, … with y = 5 − 2 = 3
- 2Smallest x > 0: Q(360°, 3)
Answer(360°, 3)
Part (bii) · 2 marks
For y = −5 cos x, find the coordinates of Q, the maximum point with smallest positive x.
- 1y = −5 cos x reflects C₁ in the x-axis, so the minima of C₁ become maxima
- 2First maximum for x > 0 is at x = 180°, y = 5: Q(180°, 5)
Answer(180°, 5)
