The question, in short
Simplify three separate algebraic expressions: one with terms in f and g, one with powers of h, and one involving a square root and a zero power.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Simplify 5f + 7g − 8f + 2g by collecting like terms.
- 15f − 8f = −3f
- 27g + 2g = 9g
- 3= −3f + 9g
Answer−3f + 9g
Part (b) · 1 mark
Simplify h² × h⁵ using index laws.
- 1h² × h⁵ = h²⁺⁵ = h⁷
Answerh⁷
Part (c) · 2 marks
Simplify √(16x²) × 5y⁰, evaluating the root and the zero power.
- 1√(16x²) = 4x
- 2y⁰ = 1
- 34x × 5 × 1 = 20x
Answer20x
