The question, in short
Expand and simplify (x + 3)(x − 5), then explain why 2x(4x − 6) is not a complete factorisation of 8x² − 12x and give the fully factorised form.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Multiply out the two brackets (x + 3)(x − 5) and collect like terms to give a simplified expression.
- 1(x + 3)(x − 5) = x² − 5x + 3x − 15
- 2= x² − 2x − 15
Answerx² − 2x − 15
Part (b) · 2 marks
State why 2x(4x − 6) fails to score full marks and write the correct complete factorisation of 8x² − 12x.
- 14x − 6 still has a common factor of 2, so it is not factorised completely
- 2Highest common factor of 8x² and 12x is 4x
- 38x² − 12x = 4x(2x − 3)
AnswerCorrect reason; 4x(2x − 3)
