The question, in short

Use a two-way table for 120 maths staff, with professors and part-time proportions given, to find full-time lecturers; then complete a Venn diagram for children liking fruit or vegetables and find the union count.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 4 marks

Given 120 staff, one fifth professors and 30% part-time, determine how many lecturers work full-time.

  1. 1Professors = 120 ÷ 5 = 24
  2. 2Part-time = 30% of 120 = 36
  3. 3Full-time = 120 − 36 = 84
  4. 4Full-time professors = 24 − 11 = 13
  5. 5Full-time lecturers = 84 − 13 = 71

Answer71

Part (bi) · 3 marks

Fill all four regions of the Venn diagram using 24 vegetable-only, 8 neither, 9 both, and F three times V.

  1. 1n(V) = 24 + 9 = 33
  2. 2n(F) = 3 × 33 = 99
  3. 3F only = 99 − 9 = 90
  4. 4Place 90, 9, 24 in the circles and 8 outside

AnswerF only 90, F ∩ V 9, V only 24, outside 8

Part (bii) · 1 mark

Calculate the total number of children in the union of sets F and V.

  1. 1n(F ∪ V) = 90 + 9 + 24
  2. 2= 123
