Part (a) · 3 marks
Combine x/4 + (3x)/8 − (x + 2)/12 into a single fraction in its simplest form.
- 1Common denominator 24
- 2x/4 = 6x/24, 3x/8 = 9x/24, (x + 2)/12 = 2(x + 2)/24
- 3(6x + 9x − 2x − 4)/24
- 4= (13x − 4)/24
Answer(13x − 4)/24
Part (b) · 1 mark
Factorise 3x(a + 4y) − ay − 4y².
- 1−ay − 4y² = −y(a + 4y)
- 23x(a + 4y) − y(a + 4y)
- 3= (3x − y)(a + 4y)
Answer(3x − y)(a + 4y)
