Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Place one pair of brackets in −12 + 4 ÷ 2 − 3 so it equals −16.

  1. 14 ÷ (2 − 3) = 4 ÷ (−1) = −4
  2. 2−12 + 4 ÷ (2 − 3) = −12 − 4 = −16

Answer−12 + 4 ÷ (2 − 3) = −16

Part (b) · 1 mark

Place one pair of brackets in −3 − 4 + 5 − 7 so it equals −5.

  1. 14 + 5 − 7 = 2
  2. 2−3 − (4 + 5 − 7) = −3 − 2 = −5
