The question, in short

Calculate two fraction problems: a subtraction of 5/6 and 7/12, and a division of 1 1/3 by 8/15, giving each result in the required form.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Subtract 7/12 from 5/6 and express the result as a fraction reduced to lowest terms.

  1. 15/6 = 10/12
  2. 210/12 − 7/12 = 3/12 = 1/4

Answer1/4

Part (b) · 3 marks

Divide 1 1/3 by 8/15 and write the result as a mixed number in lowest terms.

  1. 11 1/3 = 4/3
  2. 24/3 ÷ 8/15 = 4/3 × 15/8 = 60/24
  3. 3= 5/2 = 2 1/2

Answer2 1/2
