The question, in short

Solve the pair of simultaneous equations x + 5y = 9 and 4x + 6y = 1, giving the values of x and y.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 14x + 20y = 36
  2. 2(4x + 20y) − (4x + 6y) = 36 − 1, so 14y = 35
  3. 3y = 2.5
  4. 4x = 9 − 5 × 2.5 = −3.5

Answerx = −3.5, y = 2.5
