The question, in short

Using the grid with shape A at (2, 7), (6, 9), (8, 5), (4, 5) and shape B at (−1, −4), (1, −4), (2, −5), (0, −6), carry out a reflection and identify a transformation.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Draw shape A's mirror image across the vertical line x = 1 on the grid.

  1. 1Draw the vertical line x = 1
  2. 2Each vertex moves to the same distance on the other side: (2, 7) → (0, 7), (6, 9) → (−4, 9)
  3. 3(8, 5) → (−6, 5), (4, 5) → (−2, 5)
  4. 4Join the image vertices

AnswerShape drawn at (0, 7), (−4, 9), (−6, 5), (−2, 5)

Part (b) · 3 marks

State the single transformation taking shape A to shape B, giving its type and full details.

  1. 1B is smaller and upside down, so enlargement with negative scale factor
  2. 2A side of length 4 (from (4, 5) to (8, 5)) maps to length 2, so scale factor −1/2
  3. 3Join corresponding vertices, e.g. (2, 7) to (2, −5) and (8, 5) to (−1, −4); they cross at (2, −1)
  4. 4Enlargement, scale factor −1/2, centre (2, −1)

AnswerEnlargement, scale factor −1/2, centre (2, −1)
