0580/23 May/Jun 2026, Question 17: Rearranging Complex Formulas
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 · Paper 23 (Extended) · Non-calculator · 6 marks
اقرأ هذا الحل مشروحاً بالعربي ←
The question, in short
Substitute a = −2 and b = 3 into c = 4a² + 2b to find c, then rearrange y = 2(x − 3)/(x − 5) to make x the subject.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Work out c using c = 4a² + 2b with a = −2 and b = 3.
- 14 × (−2)² = 4 × 4 = 16
- 22 × 3 = 6
- 3c = 16 + 6 = 22
Answer22
Part (b) · 4 marks
Rearrange y = 2(x − 3)/(x − 5) so that x is expressed in terms of y.
- 1y(x − 5) = 2(x − 3)
- 2yx − 5y = 2x − 6
- 3yx − 2x = 5y − 6
- 4x(y − 2) = 5y − 6
- 5x = (5y − 6)/(y − 2)
Answer(5y − 6)/(y − 2)
