The question, in short

For the formula P = M(g² + h²), work out P from given values, then make g the subject of the equation.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Substitute M = 100, g = 3 and h = 4.5 into the formula and calculate the resulting value of P.

  1. 1P = 100(3² + 4.5²)
  2. 2= 100(9 + 20.25) = 100 × 29.25
  3. 3P = 2925

Answer2925

Part (b) · 3 marks

Rearrange P = M(g² + h²) so that g is expressed using P, M and h.

  1. 1P/M = g² + h²
  2. 2g² = P/M − h²
  3. 3g = ±√(P/M − h²)

Answer±√(P/M − h²) or ±√((P − Mh²)/M)
