The question, in short

Llew cycles to school; use a speed–time graph for the first 10 seconds and convert an average speed of 18.9 kilometres per hour into metres per second.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

On the speed–time curve, draw a tangent at t = 2 and use its gradient to estimate the acceleration.

  1. 1Draw a ruled tangent touching the curve at t = 2 (not a chord)
  2. 2Pick two points far apart on the tangent
  3. 3Acceleration = change in speed ÷ change in time
  4. 4≈ 0.3 m/s²

Answer0.15 to 0.4

Part (b) · 2 marks

Convert the average speed 18.9 kilometres per hour to metres per second.

  1. 118.9 km = 18 900 m
  2. 21 hour = 3600 s
  3. 318 900 ÷ 3600 = 5.25 m/s

Answer5.25
