The question, in short
Using a table of bird frequencies and pie chart angles, find a percentage, complete angles and the pie chart, calculate a percentage increase, and work with standard form and density.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Find the percentage of all the birds that are Starlings, using the frequencies in the table.
- 1Total = 8 + 6 + 11 + 5 = 30 birds
- 211/30 × 100 = 36.66… ≈ 36.7%
Answer36.7 or 36.66 to 36.67 or 36 2/3
Part (bi) · 2 marks
Complete the pie chart sector angle column for Jay, Starling and Robin in the table.
- 1360 ÷ 30 = 12° per bird (check: 8 × 12 = 96°)
- 2Jay = 6 × 12 = 72°, Starling = 11 × 12 = 132°, Robin = 5 × 12 = 60°
Answer72, 132 and 60
Part (bii) · 2 marks
Complete the pie chart, which already shows the Goldfinch sector, using the table data.
- 1Goldfinch: 96° for 8 birds, so each bird = 96 ÷ 8 = 12°.
- 2Jay = 6 × 12 = 72°, Starling = 11 × 12 = 132°, Robin = 5 × 12 = 60°.
- 3Draw these sectors next to the Goldfinch sector and label each: correct pie chart drawn
AnswerCorrect pie chart drawn
Part (c) · 2 marks
Calculate Tuesday's Goldfinch count after Monday's 8 increases by 262.5%.
- 1Multiplier = 1 + 262.5/100 = 3.625
- 28 × 3.625 = 29 Goldfinches
Answer29
Part (di) · 1 mark
Write 1500 million in standard form.
- 11500 million = 1 500 000 000 = 1.5 × 10⁹
Answer1.5 × 10⁹
Part (dii) · 2 marks
Work out the average number of Red-Billed Quelea per square kilometre given 1500 million birds over 21.2 million square kilometres.
- 11500 million ÷ 21.2 million = 1500 ÷ 21.2
- 2= 70.75… ≈ 70.8 birds per km²
Answer70.8 or 70.75…
