The question, in short

From a Venn diagram giving the number of elements in each region of sets A, B and C within ℰ, describe the shaded region in set notation and find n(A ∩ B ∩ C).

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Write set notation for the shaded region, which covers the parts of B and C outside A.

  1. 1Shaded: B only, B ∩ C only and C only, i.e. in B or C but not in A
  2. 2(B ∪ C) ∩ A′

Answer(B ∪ C) ∩ A′

Part (b) · 1 mark

Find n(A ∩ B ∩ C) using the number shown in the region common to all three circles.

  1. 1A ∩ B ∩ C is the centre region, containing 5
  2. 2n(A ∩ B ∩ C) = 5
