The question, in short

Simplify the algebraic fraction (2x² − 11x − 21)/(x² − 49), showing factorisation of numerator and denominator and cancelling common factors.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 12x² − 11x − 21 = 2x² − 14x + 3x − 21 = 2x(x − 7) + 3(x − 7) = (2x + 3)(x − 7)
  2. 2x² − 49 = (x + 7)(x − 7)
  3. 3(2x + 3)(x − 7)/((x + 7)(x − 7)) = (2x + 3)/(x + 7)

Answer(2x + 3)/(x + 7)
