The question, in short

From the graph of y = a cos bx + c on −180° ≤ x ≤ 180°, with maximum 3 and minimum −7, find the integer values of a, b and c.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Amplitude a = (3 − (−7))/2 = 5
  2. 2Centre line c = (3 + (−7))/2 = −2
  3. 3Maxima at 0° and every 120°, so the period is 120°
  4. 4b = 360° ÷ 120° = 3

Answera = 5, b = 3, c = −2
