The question, in short

Solve the equation |5x + 4| = |3x − 2| for x.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 15x + 4 = 3x − 2 gives 2x = −6, x = −3
  2. 25x + 4 = −(3x − 2) gives 8x = −2, x = −1/4
  3. 3Or: (5x + 4)² = (3x − 2)² gives 16x² + 52x + 12 = 0, i.e. 4x² + 13x + 3 = 0
  4. 4(x + 3)(4x + 1) = 0, x = −3 or −1/4

Answerx = −3, x = −1/4
