The question, in short

Circle with equation (x − 3)² + (y − 4)² = 20; find its centre, its radius, and point B given A (−1, 6) is one end of diameter AB.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

State the centre coordinates of the circle from its equation.

  1. 1Compare with (x − a)² + (y − b)² = r²: centre (3, 4)

Answer(3, 4)

Part (b) · 1 mark

State the radius of the circle from its equation.

  1. 1r² = 20
  2. 2r = √20 = 2√5

Answer√20 = 2√5

Part (c) · 2 marks

Given A (−1, 6) is one end of diameter AB, find the coordinates of B.

  1. 1The centre (3, 4) is the midpoint of AB
  2. 2From A(−1, 6) to the centre: +4 in x, −2 in y
  3. 3B = (3 + 4, 4 − 2) = (7, 2)

Answer(7, 2)
