The question, in short
Solve for the constant a given that the definite integral from 0 to a of 1/(3x + 2) dx equals ln 4.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 5 marks
- 1∫ 1/(3x + 2) dx = (1/3) ln(3x + 2)
- 2(1/3)(ln(3a + 2) − ln 2) = ln 4
- 3ln((3a + 2)/2) = 3 ln 4 = ln 64
- 4(3a + 2)/2 = 64, so 3a + 2 = 128
- 5a = 42
Answera = 42
