The question, in short

Solve the equation |x² − 5x| = 6 for x.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 1x² − 5x = 6 ⇒ x² − 5x − 6 = 0
  2. 2(x − 6)(x + 1) = 0 ⇒ x = 6 or −1
  3. 3x² − 5x = −6 ⇒ x² − 5x + 6 = 0
  4. 4(x − 3)(x − 2) = 0 ⇒ x = 3 or 2

Answerx = −1, 2, 3, 6
