The question, in short
Find the values of x and y that satisfy both x/(2y) − 4y/x = −1 and x = 1 − 6y at the same time.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 5 marks
- 1Multiply by 2xy: x² − 8y² = −2xy
- 2Substitute x = 1 − 6y: (1 − 6y)² − 8y² = −2y(1 − 6y)
- 316y² − 10y + 1 = 0
- 4(2y − 1)(8y − 1) = 0 ⇒ y = 1/2 or 1/8
- 5x = 1 − 6y ⇒ x = −2 or 1/4
Answerx = −2, y = 1/2 and x = 1/4, y = 1/8
