The question, in short
Find the values of x satisfying the modulus equation |2x² + x − 10| = 5.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 5 marks
- 12x² + x − 10 = 5 ⇒ 2x² + x − 15 = 0
- 2(2x − 5)(x + 3) = 0 ⇒ x = 5/2 or −3
- 32x² + x − 10 = −5 ⇒ 2x² + x − 5 = 0
- 4x = (−1 ± √(1 + 40))/4 = (−1 ± √41)/4
Answerx = 5/2, x = −3, x = (−1 ± √41)/4
