The question, in short

The graph of y = |3x + 3| is shown on a grid from x = −4 to 4 and y = −6 to 6. Use a graphical method to solve |3x + 3| ≥ |x − 2|.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Draw y = |x − 2|: a V-shape with vertex (2, 0), y-intercept 2
  2. 2The graphs cross where 3x + 3 = −(x − 2), giving x = −0.25
  3. 3and where −(3x + 3) = −(x − 2), giving x = −2.5
  4. 4|3x + 3| is on or above |x − 2| outside these points
  5. 5x ≤ −2.5 or x ≥ −0.25

Answerx ≤ −2.5, x ≥ −0.25 (with a correct graph of y = |x − 2| drawn)
