The question, in short

A square PQUV of side 6 cm and a rectangle QRST of width 4 cm have equal areas. Work out the perimeter of the combined shape PRSTUV.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Area of square = 6 × 6 = 36 cm²
  2. 24 × h = 36, so length of rectangle = 9 cm
  3. 3PR = 6 + 4 = 10 cm, RS = 9 cm, ST = 4 cm, TU = 9 − 6 = 3 cm, UV = 6 cm, VP = 6 cm
  4. 4Perimeter = 10 + 9 + 4 + 3 + 6 + 6 = 38 cm
