Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Multiply out the two brackets (4x − y)(2x + 5y) and collect like terms to give a simplified expansion.
- 1(4x − y)(2x + 5y) = 8x² + 20xy − 2xy − 5y²
- 2= 8x² + 18xy − 5y²
Answer8x² + 18xy − 5y²
Part (b) · 2 marks
Simplify (x¹²/8)^(2/3), applying the power to both the x term and the 8.
- 1(x¹²)^(2/3) = x^(12 × 2/3) = x⁸
- 28^(2/3) = (∛8)² = 2² = 4
- 3(x¹²/8)^(2/3) = x⁸/4
Answerx⁸/4
