Part (a) · 2 marks
Simplify √98 − √18.
- 1√98 = √49 × √2 = 7√2
- 2√18 = √9 × √2 = 3√2
- 37√2 − 3√2 = 4√2
Answer4√2
Part (b) · 3 marks
Rationalise the denominator of 5/(3 + √7) and give the answer in its simplest form.
- 1Multiply by (3 − √7)/(3 − √7)
- 2Denominator: (3 + √7)(3 − √7) = 9 − 7 = 2
- 3Numerator: 5(3 − √7) = 15 − 5√7
- 4= (15 − 5√7)/2
Answer5(3 − √7)/2 or (15 − 5√7)/2
