The question, in short
Using two similar triangles ABC and PQR with matching angles, given AC = 3.4 cm, AB = 4 cm and PQ = 18 cm, find a missing side and then an area.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Find the length PR of the larger triangle, using the correspondence between the given sides.
- 1Scale factor = 18 ÷ 4 = 4.5
- 2PR corresponds to AC
- 3PR = 3.4 × 4.5 = 15.3 cm
Answer15.3
Part (b) · 2 marks
Given the larger triangle's area is 56.7 cm², work out the area of the smaller triangle.
- 1Area factor = (4/18)²
- 2Area of ABC = 56.7 × (4/18)²
- 3= 56.7 × 16/324 = 2.8 cm²
Answer2.8
