The question, in short
Expand algebraic expressions: a single bracket 3(x − 5), then expand and simplify the product of three brackets (x + 1)(2x − 3)(x + 4).
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 1 mark
Expand 3(x − 5) by multiplying each term inside the bracket by 3.
- 13 × x − 3 × 5
- 2= 3x − 15
Answer3x − 15
Part (b) · 3 marks
Expand and simplify (x + 1)(2x − 3)(x + 4), collecting like terms in the final answer.
- 1(x + 1)(x + 4) = x² + 5x + 4
- 2(x² + 5x + 4)(2x − 3) = 2x³ − 3x² + 10x² − 15x + 8x − 12
- 3= 2x³ + 7x² − 7x − 12
Answer2x³ + 7x² − 7x − 12
