The question, in short
Expand and simplify two algebraic expressions: one with a single bracket multiplied by a term, and one product of three binomials.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Expand and simplify 2x − x(5 − x²).
- 12x − x(5 − x²) = 2x − 5x + x³
- 2= x³ − 3x
Answerx³ − 3x
Part (b) · 3 marks
Expand and simplify the product (x + 4)(x − 5)(x + 3).
- 1(x + 4)(x − 5) = x² − 5x + 4x − 20 = x² − x − 20
- 2(x² − x − 20)(x + 3) = x³ + 3x² − x² − 3x − 20x − 60
- 3= x³ + 2x² − 23x − 60
Answerx³ + 2x² − 23x − 60
