The question, in short

Factorise two algebraic expressions: a difference of two squares in p, and a four-term expression in x and y by grouping.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Factorise 4p² − 1.

  1. 14p² − 1 = (2p)² − 1² (difference of two squares)
  2. 2= (2p − 1)(2p + 1)

Answer(2p − 1)(2p + 1)

Part (b) · 2 marks

Factorise 10xy − 12 + 15x − 8y by grouping terms.

  1. 110xy − 8y + 15x − 12
  2. 2= 2y(5x − 4) + 3(5x − 4)
  3. 3= (5x − 4)(2y + 3)

Answer(5x − 4)(2y + 3)
