The question, in short
Three algebra tasks: expand a product of two brackets, solve an equation with a fraction, and solve a quadratic equation, showing working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Expand and simplify the product (e + 3)(e − 5).
- 1Multiply each pair: e × e = e², e × (−5) = −5e, 3 × e = 3e, 3 × (−5) = −15
- 2Collect the e terms: −5e + 3e = −2e
- 3= e² − 2e − 15
Answere² − 2e − 15
Part (b) · 3 marks
Solve y = (2y + 1)/5, showing clear algebraic working.
- 1Multiply both sides by 5: 5y = 2y + 1
- 2Subtract 2y from both sides: 3y = 1
- 3y = 1/3
Answer1/3
Part (c) · 3 marks
Solve x² + 3x − 18 = 0, showing working clearly.
- 1Factorise: (x + 6)(x − 3) = 0
- 2x + 6 = 0 or x − 3 = 0
- 3x = −6, x = 3
Answerx = −6, x = 3
