The question, in short
Five short algebra tasks: solve a linear equation, rearrange a formula, and simplify three expressions involving powers and indices.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Solve 5m + 7 = 24 for m.
- 1Subtract 7 from both sides: 5m = 17
- 2Divide by 5: m = 17/5
- 3m = 3.4
Answer3.4
Part (b) · 2 marks
Rearrange k = (t − e) ÷ 2 to make t the subject.
- 1Multiply both sides by 2: 2k = t − e
- 2Add e to both sides: t = 2k + e
Answert = 2k + e
Part (c) · 1 mark
Simplify p⁸ ÷ p³, giving the result as a power of p.
- 1Dividing powers of p: subtract the indices, 8 − 3 = 5
- 2p⁸ ÷ p³ = p⁵
Answerp⁵
Part (d) · 1 mark
Simplify n⁰.
- 1Anything (except 0) to the power 0 is 1, so n⁰ = 1
Answer1
Part (e) · 2 marks
Simplify (3x²y⁵)³, applying the power to each factor.
- 1Cube each part: 3³ × (x²)³ × (y⁵)³
- 23³ = 27, (x²)³ = x⁶, (y⁵)³ = y¹⁵
- 3= 27x⁶y¹⁵
Answer27x⁶y¹⁵
