The question, in short
Solve the simultaneous equations 4x + 5y = 4 and 2x − y = 9, showing clear algebraic working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 3 marks
- 1From 2x − y = 9: y = 2x − 9
- 2Substitute: 4x + 5(2x − 9) = 4
- 34x + 10x − 45 = 4, so 14x = 49
- 4x = 3.5
- 5y = 2 × 3.5 − 9 = −2
Answerx = 3.5, y = −2
