The question, in short
Find the midpoint of the two intersection points of the curve y = (10x − 3)(x + 1) and the line y − 6x = 0, showing working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 6 marks
- 1The line is y = 6x, so (10x − 3)(x + 1) = 6x
- 2Expand and tidy: 10x² + x − 3 = 0
- 3Factorise: (5x + 3)(2x − 1) = 0, so x = −0.6 or 0.5
- 4Points: (−0.6, −3.6) and (0.5, 3)
- 5Midpoint = ((−0.6 + 0.5)/2, (−3.6 + 3)/2) = (−0.05, −0.3)
Answer(−0.05, −0.3)
