The question, in short

Trapezium OACB has OA = 3a, OB = 6b, AC = 4b. N lies on OC with ANB straight. Find ON in terms of a and b.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 1OC = 3a + 4b, so ON = t(3a + 4b)
  2. 2AB = −3a + 6b, so ON = 3a + s(−3a + 6b)
  3. 3Match a: 3t = 3 − 3s; match b: 4t = 6s
  4. 4Solve: s = 0.4, t = 0.6
  5. 5ON = 0.6(3a + 4b) = 1.8a + 2.4b

Answer1.8a + 2.4b
