The question, in short

Four whole numbers a, a, b, c with a < b < c have mode 7, median 8.5 and mean 9. Find a, b and c.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1The mode is 7 and a appears twice, so a = 7
  2. 2Median = (7 + b) ÷ 2 = 8.5, so b = 10
  3. 3Mean is 9, so the total is 4 × 9 = 36
  4. 4c = 36 − 7 − 7 − 10 = 12
  5. 5a = 7, b = 10, c = 12

Answera = 7, b = 10, c = 12
