Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Simplify (3k²)⁴, giving the result in its simplest index form.

  1. 1(3k²)⁴ = 3⁴ × (k²)⁴
  2. 23⁴ = 81 and (k²)⁴ = k⁸
  3. 3Answer: 81k⁸

Answer81k⁸

Part (b) · 2 marks

Simplify (21m⁴n) ÷ (3n⁻⁵), leaving the answer with positive indices.

  1. 121 ÷ 3 = 7, and m⁴ stays as it is
  2. 2n ÷ n⁻⁵ = n^(1 − (−5)) = n⁶
  3. 3Answer: 7m⁴n⁶

Answer7m⁴n⁶
