Part (a) · 3 marks
Fill the four missing ordered card values so the six numbers have smallest 5, largest 24, median 14 and mode 8.
- 1With six numbers, the median is the mean of the 3rd and 4th, so they add to 28
- 2Mode 8: make the 2nd and 3rd numbers both 8
- 34th number = 28 − 8 = 20
- 45th number is between 20 and 24, for example 21
- 55, 8, 8, 20, 21, 24
Answer5, 8, 8, 20, 21, 24
Part (b) · 3 marks
Using mean 21 after 5 games and mean 23 after 6 games, work out the points scored in game 6.
- 1After 5 games, mean score = 21
- 2Total points after 5 games = 5 × 21 = 105
- 3After 6 games, mean score = 23
- 4Total points after 6 games = 6 × 23 = 138
- 5Points scored in 6th game = 138 − 105 = 33
