The question, in short

Expand and simplify a product of three algebraic factors, then simplify a fractional power expression with negative exponent.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 3 marks

Expand and simplify 5x(x + 2)(3x − 4).

  1. 15x(x + 2) = 5x² + 10x
  2. 2(5x² + 10x)(3x − 4) = 15x³ − 20x² + 30x² − 40x
  3. 315x³ + 10x² − 40x

Answer15x³ + 10x² − 40x

Part (b) · 3 marks

Simplify completely (16w⁸/y²⁰)^(−3/4).

  1. 1Negative power: flip the fraction, giving (y²⁰/(16w⁸))^(3/4)
  2. 216^(3/4) = 2³ = 8, (w⁸)^(3/4) = w⁶, (y²⁰)^(3/4) = y¹⁵
  3. 3y¹⁵/(8w⁶)

Answery¹⁵/(8w⁶)
