The question, in short
Expand and simplify two algebraic expressions, then factorise a two-term expression in b and c fully.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 3 marks
Expand x(2x − 3) + 7(2x + 1) − 5 and simplify to a single expression.
- 1x(2x − 3) = 2x² − 3x and 7(2x + 1) = 14x + 7
- 22x² − 3x + 14x + 7 − 5
- 32x² + 11x + 2
Answer2x² + 11x + 2
Part (b) · 2 marks
Expand the product (y + 4)(2 − y) and simplify the result.
- 1Multiply each term: 2y − y² + 8 − 4y
- 2Collect like terms: 8 − y² − 2y
Answer8 − y² − 2y
Part (c) · 2 marks
Factorise 15b⁵c − 35b³c⁹ completely, taking out the highest common factor.
- 1Highest common factor of both terms: 5b³c
- 215b⁵c ÷ 5b³c = 3b² and 35b³c⁹ ÷ 5b³c = 7c⁸
- 35b³c(3b² − 7c⁸)
Answer5b³c(3b² − 7c⁸)
